George W. King, 94, passed away March 23, 2023. He was the owner/publisher of Coastal Cruise Tour Guides.
George was the only son of Bessie B. King and George W. King, Sr.. Born in Port Townsend, he was a Seattle native that grew up in the Montlake neighborhood, graduated from Garfield High School, then attended the University of Washington. Most summers were spent in Alaska, as his father was a cannery superintendent. During his late teens and early 20’s he worked on fishing boats and tenders in Southeast Alaska and Kodiak. George spent two years in the Navy stationed in Seattle at Sandpoint Naval Air Station. Using the G.I. Bill he went to art school in New York City to study illustration and cartooning, leading to a career in graphic design.
In 1954 George married his college sweetheart, Marilyn Braarud, and soon welcomed daughter Karin.
He was a talented artist and worked for the Seattle P-I and the early Seattle Magazine. He then opened his own graphic design business, specializing in advertising brochures for the travel industry.
In the early 1980’s George met Susie Mucklestone on a blind date and they have been together ever since - over 40 years. Susie was a travel agent and they were lucky enough to travel the world together for many years.
In 1983 George developed Coastal Cruise Tour Guides, with daughter Karin. It has been a successful small publishing company with four map/travel guidebooks.
George was passionate about salmon fishing, wooden boats, sailing, and traveling the globe with Susie. He also loved spending time at the old family farmhouse on Marrowstone Island and working on his beloved wooden sailboat.
George is survived by his longtime love, Susan Mucklestone, and daughters Karin Hasselberg and Kim Bowman and family. No services at his request.
